A look into my studio
A view into the stages of the painting process
Bachfallenferner (Summer)
2024
ink, charcoal, acrylic, graphite on canvas
66 x 52 cm

Every artwork starts like this.
Drawing with graphite, working things out, like dimension.
In my process this is the most important part, for me, if this does not go well, then the whole artwork doesn't feel right for me.

Each artwork is built up in layers, of light and shadows, rocks and form. The process is so clear to me that I always know when it is finished.

A Moment Lost
2024
ink, charcoal, acrylic, graphite on canvas
66 x 52 cm

I really like the process, and seeing how each stage of painting brings the painting to life.
Often I wish that I would stop at a certain stage because I like the look of it so much. For me each stage is interesting.

A Moment of Time of this Frozen River
2024
ink, charcoal, acrylic, graphite on canvas
The time it takes to complete and artwork is determined by the complexity, and the size. But sometimes a smaller artwork can take the same amount of time as a larger work.

A State of Flow, Retreating
2024
ink, charcoal, acrylic, graphite on canvas
74 x 40 cm

I really like the way the ice is flowing, you can still see the movement, a frozen river

Shekar the art dog chilling while I paint

I spend so many hours here, sometimes I do not even notice Time, but it moves on...
Thoughts
There is a kind of nostolgia to be painting something that is changing so quickly, the ice is melting so fast it is changing constantly and disappearing fast. It is different to painting mountains, that even though they do change, their changes are slower, less noticeable in a human lifetime. They have a kind of foreverness about them, perceived from the short lifetime of a human being.
My glacier artworks, are romantically recording something that we are losing.
That will have a big impact on many things, the lives of animals and humanity alike.
There is a hint of sadness, but also an awe in the beauty of glacier ice.
Time moves on... it does not wait for anyone or anything.... And everything on earth is connected.
'Earth beats in my heart,
My heart beats.'
